Planning

Historical Context

The cliffs were formed over 320 million years ago during the Upper Carboniferous period. O'Brien's Tower was built in 1835 by Cornelius O'Brien specifically as a viewing point for Victorian tourists.

Photography Tips

  • Bring a wide-angle lens for the landscapes
  • Use a polarizing filter to cut glare on the water
  • Golden hour (late afternoon) offers the best relief lighting on the cliff faces
  • Protect your lens from sea spray

Insider Tips

  • Walk south towards Hag's Head for fewer crowds
  • Bring binoculars for puffin spotting (May-July)
  • Use the restroom at the Visitor Center before walking the cliffs
  • Download offline maps as signal can be spotty

Our Partners

  • In partnership with Galway Tour Company, Lally Tours, and other top-rated local providers verified by Viator.

Fun Facts

  • The cliffs appear in 'Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince' and 'The Princess Bride'.
  • They rise 702 feet (214 meters) at their highest point near O'Brien's Tower.
  • The cliffs are home to Ireland's largest colony of seabirds, with over 20 species nesting there.

Highlight of our Ireland trip!

The tour from Galway was seamless. Our driver, Mike, was hilarious and incredibly knowledgeable about Irish history. The Cliffs were breathtaking, but the stop at the Burren was an unexpected surprise. Highly recommend booking the full-day option.

Spectacular scenery, great value

Booked the express shuttle because we wanted more time to hike on our own. It was perfect. The bus was comfortable, on time, and the 2 hours at the cliffs were just enough to walk to Hag's Head and back. Great value for money.

Beautiful but windy

Be prepared for the wind! The tour itself was organized very well. We stopped at Dunguaire Castle for photos which was lovely. The guide spoke clear English. I only wish we had 30 minutes more at the lunch stop in Doolin.

Excellent guide and comfortable bus

A long day but worth it. The driver navigated the narrow roads expertly. The Cliffs of Moher are a must-see. The visitor center is very modern with a good exhibition. I appreciated the free wifi on the bus to upload photos.

Magical experience

We took the tour that included the Aillwee Cave. It was fascinating! The landscape of the Burren looks like the moon. The cliffs were foggy at first but cleared up for a perfect view. A wonderful experience from start to finish.

Good organization

Efficient booking process and the ticket was accepted immediately on the phone. The bus left exactly on time. The stop at the Baby Cliffs was a nice bonus. Good mix of driving and walking.

Puffins and panoramic views!

We were lucky enough to see Puffins! Our guide told us exactly where to look. The drive along the Wild Atlantic Way is stunning. Don't sleep on the bus or you'll miss the views.

Best day tour from Galway

I've done a few tours in Ireland and this was the best. Great balance of stops. The lunch at the pub in Doolin was delicious (try the chowder). The cliffs are massive—photos don't do them justice.
